If ever someone was born to cut hair, it's Myrna Marin. A native
Angeleno, Myrna earned her license before she even graduated high
school. At 25, she opened her own salon on a sleepy stretch of Silver
Lake Boulevard. Now the area is ground zero for the progressive Silver Lake scene, something that was established by artists like Myrna who saw the potential of the neighborhood and built it from the ground up.
"Haircutting is like an art to me; it's my life's work," Myrna says. Her dedication shows in her constant activities to update herself and her clients on the latest in techniques and products. Because MoDem is a Sebastian Grand Salon—the top honor a salon can earn from the prestigious hair care company—Myrna has access to the very best techniques and products in the world of hair. And because of Myrna's extensive experience and knowledge in the field, she has become a master trainer, certified to train stylists right in her salon.
Expect total involvement from Myrna when she cuts, colors and styles
your hair. She looks and listens, then contributes ideas to complete a
client's dream for their new "do". "It's all about being individual,"
Myrna says. "Everybody wants their own look to fit their own identity.
It used to be that hairdressers did balanced cuts and angles, but now we customize cuts to make the hair come alive with movement." Because no two heads are alike, Myrna has developed her own distinct style of cutting hair. It's called hand-carving, and it allows her to customize a
cut to an individual's specific hair texture and patterns. "I go in with
my hands and I break up the hair," Myrna explains. "I watch how it moves in order to visualize the look I'm going to create."
Myrna's one-on-one attention, and her obvious love for her work, has
been key in making MoDem so successful year after year. And Myrna
doesn't take the success in stride; she is also actively involved in
several charities that give back to the community. Riding her bike for a full week in the AIDS Ride, she raised a whopping $12,000 for AIDS organizations. Her annual Christmas tree decoration event gets her clients and friends to donate to causes such as Planet Hope and Dream Street. And as a tennis enthusiast, Myrna has helped raise thousands of dollars for underprivileged kids to participate in student athlete programs at Cal State Los Angeles.
With her expertise and dedication, Myrna has created a salon that is
more than just a place to get your hair cut. It's a whole experience!
